Sites of Special Scientific Interest

||
Sites of Special Scientific Interest are designated by English Nature and usually contain the best examples of particular habitats in the region.

Ashfield boasts more Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) than any other district in Nottinghamshire. The district abounds with natural history, much of which comes from its unspoilt heritage while some come from former industrial sites where man and nature have worked together. These sites include old quarries and railway cuttings etc.

SSSIs are given legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) (as amended) which requires the landowner to consult English Nature before carrying out any operations likely to damage the special interest of the site.

Ashfield District Council has to keep up-to-date maps of SSSI's and take them into consideration during local planning.

The map below shows the area of SSSI's in green.

Alternatively, page down to the table below the map, which also gives a brief description of each site.

NB Accurate when published on website (28th January 2002) but always check with Ashfield District Council for most up-to-date status.
