Green Flag Parks

||
The Council gained a record three Green Flags for Ashfield’s parks in 2007, reflecting the investment that has been made in green spaces in Ashfield in recent years.

Sutton Lawn, Brierley Forest Park & Nature Reserve (Huthwaite) and Portland Park (Kirkby) were all entered for the award, with Sutton Lawn gaining a flag for the third year in a row and awards received by Brierely Forest Park and Portland Park. Kingsway Park narrowly failed to gain an award

 The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces and began in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country.  Ashfield’s parks are 3 of only 15 awarded a Green Flag this year within Nottinghamshire. In 2008 all four of these parks, as well as Titchfield Park, Hucknall, have been entered for an award. Judging takes place in May/June

"The awards have been achieved through a continuing commitment to physical improvements and effective maintenance and the successful involvement of users and community members through park friends groups"

The award is made on an annual basis and to regain the award year on year improvements must be demonstrated,through the implementation of a  management plan.
The awards are judged on the following 8 criteria:

  • A Welcoming Place
  • Clean and Well Maintained
  • Healthy, Safe, and Secure
  • Sustainability
  • Management
  • Green Space Strategy
  • Conservation and Heritage
  • Marketing
Investment in parks is guided by Site Management Plans.

A large proportion of investment has been funded by Section 106 monies (contributions paid by developers for housing) -  See the Improving Open Spaces page for more information about where the money has been spent in recent years.
