Volunteer Action on the Hills

Volunteer action in the hills
DATE: 20th AUGUST 2007

Volunteers from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) have been put on Holly Hill open space in Selston, to begin to restore valuable habitats on the site. The work has been planned and co-ordinated by Ashfield District Council, with the aim of improving the space for both wildlife and users.

The Hills contain areas of rare acid grassland, a habitat that has seen a decline of nearly 99% in Nottinghamshire since 1930. In order to prevent further loss, volunteers have been clearing bracken and scrub to encourage restoration of the fine grass habitat. It is also anticipated that clearance will reduce the occurrence of fires on the site.

BTCV have undertaken two workdays on the site this month and tasks have also included mending steps and clearing litter. Two further days are planned on 28th and 29th August. Anyone interested in getting involved, gaining skills and learning about the habitats of the site should contact Ian Ward at BTCV on 0115 9313316.

A management plan has been developed by Ashfield District Council and further seasonal works are planned, including the removal of invasive tree species, path repairs and the installation of signage and interpretation.

Meanwhile, the Council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team has been tackling unsightly fly-tipping on the boundaries of the space which can prove hazardous to wildlife.

Leader of the Council, Cllr. Jason Zadrozny said: 'By improving the management of this space and educating users about its importance, we hope to encourage responsible behaviour as well as supporting national conservation efforts'.
