West Park well and truly opened

||
Opening West park
DATE: 20th August 2007

West Park, the new community recreation area at Southwell Close in Kirkby was well and truly opened on Saturday (18th August, 2007).

Despite the very wet weather local young people and families turned out to enjoy the fun activities on offer including circus skills, bouncing castle and fun slide, mosaic workshop, crafts and face painting.

Chairman of Ashfield District Council, Councillor Harry Toseland and his lady visited the event and officially opened the recreation area together with local ward Member, Councillor John Baird.

Due to the weather the kit making workshop took place in the local community centre, the Homesteads, whose social committee also joined in the event by providing home made refreshments.

Mel Grant, Chairman of West Park Community Group who worked with Ashfield District Council to stage the event said that he was very pleased with how things had gone and hoped that more activities will be planned for the future that will bring the community together.

A mosaic coat of arms completed at the event will be incorporated into a memorial garden on the West Park site together with a plaque commemorating three founder members of the group. Funding has been secured to establish the garden and anyone interested in helping with this project can contact the group through Ashfield District Council Cultural Services officer Gill Brookes on 01623 457091.
