Improvement to Public Toilets Approved

||
Councillors have approved plans to further improve the public toilets at Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Hucknall in a bid to combat vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Cabinet on Thursday (25th July, 2007), when members were told that the recently refurbished toilets in Kirkby-in-Ashfield had suffered numerous incidents of vandalism soon after they re-opened.

Cllr. Michael Mullaney, Portfolio Holder for Health and Housing told the meeting:

“During the first few weeks of operation, there were numerous incidents of vandalism, with the doors being a particular target,” he said.

As a result of the incidents, it was decided to limit the opening hours to between 7am and 7pm. These have since reverted to 24 hour opening with fewer incidents of vandalism.

To combat this behaviour, it was agreed to modify the existing coin mechanisms so they can operate on a timer system if necessary. In addition it was agreed to upgrade the doors to ones with steel protection.

Cabinet also approved similar improvements to be made to the newly refurbished toilets in Hucknall as a precaution against similar incidents in the future.

Authorisation was given to the Portfolio Holder, in consultation with the Leader of the Council, to amend the opening hours of the public conveniences as and when required in response to any future occurrences of vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
