Rags to Riches!
||To help increase the amount of items recycled in the Ashfield area, Sisters Textile Clothing Recyclers, based in Jacksdale, with support from Ashfield District Council, recently launched a new scheme working with local schools.
Holly Hill Primary school in Selston was the first school to take part in the new scheme. Families of the pupils donated old, unwanted clothing to help the school raise funds for the school allotment. The first collection managed to raise over £141.
All clothing, bedding and shoes are passed on to Sisters Textiles and sorted before being distributed to those deemed as needy throughout the world.
As a big thank you for the hard work of the pupils, Sisters Textiles presented the school with a certificate and cheque.
Michelle Harvey from Sisters Textiles said: “It’s such a wonderful idea. When I asked the school what they were going to do with the money, Mr. Eden, the head teacher said they were using it to grow fruit and vegetables in the school allotment, which they will then sell to the children’s’ families.”
The School recycling scheme is part of the Ashfield District Council/sisters Textiles recycling partnership. Both partners are always looking at ways of collecting textiles while raising funds for the local community – whether its school collection, kerbside collection or clothing left over from jumble sales.
For more information on any of the schemes, please contact the Council’s Recycling Officer, Mark Beagley on 01623 457924.
