Warwick Close Flats to be Demolished!

||
DATE: 26th July 2007

Eight flats at Warwick Close, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, are to be demolished and a long term action plan to be put in place to make the area a safe, healthy and attractive place to live.

Members of Ashfield District Council’s Cabinet, who met on Thursday (26th July, 2007) agreed to the demolition in order to help improve conditions on the Close – with particular consideration to the issues of crime and anti-social behaviour.

The Cabinet heard that Warwick Close is typical of many areas in the country that suffer from high levels of deprivation, crime and anti-social behaviour, which is compounded by the design and general layout of the Close.

The area has been recognised as having problems for many years and in the early part of 2003 a decision was taken to stop letting the flats as they became empty.

A working group considered the position during late 2006 early 2007 and a decision was taken to recommend demolition of two of the blocks of flats.

Cllr. Michael Mullaney, Portfolio Holder for Health and Housing, said:

“The demolition of the flats is a way of combating anti-social behaviour and crime because of the design of the flats and the lay out of the close.

He added that a long term blueprint for the area will be required to deal with the specific issues facing the residents.

“The Council wants to make this a safe, healthy and attractive place to live in. A blueprint will be developed during the coming months and will include consultation with local residents in due course before being referred to cabinet.

“In the meantime the existing policy of not letting the remaining flats on the close will be continued although the houses are being let. This will then allow further consideration of the future of the other blocks of flats in the Close”.

An initial estimate of £17,000 has been obtained to demolish the two blocks of flats. A further quote is being sought for the demolition of the flats and including security, levelling, providing topsoil and grassing over.
