When Skegby Became Skeggy!

||
Date: 07.09.07

A mock “beach” was among the top attractions for youngsters who visited a community funday held recently at Healdswood Recreation Ground, Skegby.

Thanks to a novel recycling idea which brought the seaside right onto their doorstep, the youngsters were able to enjoy building sandcastles without travelling all the way to Skeggy!

Cllr Jason Zadrozny, Leader of the Council explained:

“The Community group organising the event asked the children what they would like to do during the holidays, and many of them said they would like to go to the seaside.

“After the appalling floods earlier in the Summer, the Council had a surplus of sandbags, so we thought it would be great to put them to good use, and create a beach area at the Funday.

“The sandbags were emptied into paddling pools, buckets and spades were provided and the improvised “beach” proved to be a big hit with the young visitors!”

Cllr Zadrozny added that when the event was over, the sand was returned to the depot, where it was put back into the sandbags for future use.

More than 200 children attended the Healdswood Funday, which also featured sport activities, play area consultation, advice on healthy eating and lots of family entertainment.
