DATE: 11th September 2007

As part of the National Heritage Open Days weekend (6th – 9th September), Ashfield District Council provided two heritage minibus tours around the district.

Participants were able to discover much of our rich heritage including places like the romantic ruins of Annesley old church, the unique wharf at Jacksdale, the ruins of two Norman manor houses, the locations of two old castles, the delights of conservation area, Nottinghamshire’s oldest cruck framed house, England’s oldest viaduct and many former tramways al of which was accompanied by aspects of their history.

The tours included a lunch break, which was taken at the Teversal Manor Room, where a heritage video was shown and different aspects of our heritage discussed and a brief tour of historic Teversal Church was given.

All those who attended were both surprised at the amount of heritage on our doorstep and grateful for the opportunity to learn about it. Free heritage bus tours run around Hucknall during the summer months, organized by the Hucknall Tourism and Regeneration Group. Due to the success of this new tour which covers the reminder of Ashfield, it is hoped that it will be repeated next year.
