Ashfield’s Medal Haul at Youth Games

||
Date: 7th July 2008

The East Midlands Airport Nottinghamshire Youth Games were staged in Ashfield for the second year in succession and the hosts collected a string of medals along the way.

Despite the rain, Ashfield led out the Opening Ceremony in a parade consisting of all seven Nottinghamshire Districts, the City of Nottingham and volunteers.

Ashfield picked up a well-earned Gold Medal in gymnastics and won six of the seven groups entered in judo.

Three Silver medals were gained in disability cricket, badminton and orienteering, and six bronze medals in boccia (secondary), disability football, girls and boys’ hockey and High 5 netball.

An athletics competition for Ashfield Primary Schools was staged on the athletics track, from which Orchard picked up Gold, Hillside Silver and Morven Park Bronze.

The Brocky and Peggy Roadshow was very popular throughout the day, with Brocky Broccolli and Peggy Pineapple, Ashfield District Council’s Healthy Lifestyles mascots handing out free bags, bottles and bananas to all competitors.

Theresa Hodgkinson, Leisure and Lifestyles Manager for Ashfield District Council said:

”The day has been a great success. It is inspiring to see so many children participating in sport and enjoying themselves. A big thank you to everyone who helped organise the event.”
