Help celebrate Hucknall’s history at “Heritage in the Park”

||
Date: 3rd June 2008

Join the Friends of Titchfield Park and local history enthusiasts this Sunday on Titchfield Park at a special event to collect and share memories of the park.

The event will run from 2-5pm on Sunday 8th June in and around the Cricket Pavilion, and will include a range of displays from local heritage groups and organisations, including Hucknall Heritage Society, This Is Hucknall, Hucknall Library Local History Group, Hucknall U3A history Group and Hucknall Tourism and Regeneration Group. A guided history walk through the park will be taking place at 2.30pm and photography workshops will also be available, all free. Refreshments will be available.

Local residents are also being asked to bring with them any photographs, stories or memories they have of Titchfield Park through the ages. Scanners will be available so all material brought can be taken back home safely. Material would be welcomed from all period’s right up to the present day, and could include the parks official opening in 1922, the popular marching band displays, sporting events or the changing appearance of the park. The material collected will be used to develop a heritage trail around the park for visitors and local schools.

The event is supported by a grant of £23,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The grant was awarded to Ashfield District Council to enable the restoration of the ‘boathouse’ structure; the park’s only remaining original building, alongside the creation of a community-based heritage trail. Work on the ‘boathouse’ is all set to commence, based on early photographs of the building standing as it once did next to a large boating lake [picture attached].

Titchfield Park was originally donated to the people of Hucknall by the Duke and Duchess of Portland in 1914 to celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary and the coming-of-age of their son the Marquis of Titchfield. The creation of a landscaped public park took eight years and much of the original layout still in evidence today, including the striking cricket oval. The park has seen many changes since it’s opening however, including recent additions such as two new sports pavilions, a skate park and youth area. Improvement works are continuing, with path resurfacing works currently underway and the redevelopment of the children’s play area set to commence in coming weeks.
