Sutton Marketplace gets a Makeover

||
Date: 29th May 2008

Sutton Marketplace has been transformed by a scheme which has been implemented and funded jointly by Ashfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, with assistance of grant funding from Alliance SSP as part of the Market Towns Regeneration Alliance Programme.

The pedestrian improvement scheme was identified by the Sutton Town Centre Masterplan – adopted in March 2007 – as a priority for the area.

Walls around the Marketplace have been reduced in height and replaced with modern railings, which enable pedestrians to see the whole area more clearly. This will help pedestrians navigate around the area and should also help in creating natural surveillance to help reduce crime and the fear of crime.

Other areas of the town centre have also been improved by the scheme. The pedestrian crossing between Forest Street and Outram Street now has a raised plateau with red imprint which clearly marks the route for pedestrians. Further up Forest Street, adjacent to Halfords’ car park, the planting areas have been improved and railings have been installed. This defines the route through the town centre towards the retail park on Station Road.

The footpath between Sutton Centre and the Health Centre (off High Pavement) has also been improved and railings are to be installed. This has created a better visibility towards the Marketplace and should help pedestrians to travel through the area more easily.

Leader of the Council, Cllr. Jason Zadrozny, said he believed the improvements would greatly benefit shoppers and pedestrians using the Marketplace.

“This is a popular, focal area of Sutton. These improvements make the area brighter and more secure which should attract more traders and shoppers to the town centre. It demonstrates our on-going commitment to regenerating our town centres and giving people a sense of pride in their local environment.”

Nottinghamshire County Councillor, Cllr. Edward Llywellyn-Jones, who represents the area said: “I would like to thanks all the shopkeepers, market traders and shoppers for their patience while this crucial work to improve their market square has been taking place.

“I have received a lot of positive feedback from people who have commented on how good the market square looks now that the walls have been taken down and replaced with railings.

“As the local County Councillor I am very proud of the new improvements and this scheme is a good example of what can be achieved with partnership working and local consultation.”
