Chef’s Academy Gets Under Way
||Families from across the Ashfield area have successfully completed the first Chef’s Academy course at the Ashfield School Skills Centre, learning how to cook from scratch, right through to how to serve up a delicious three course meal.
Organised by Ashfield District Council, in partnership with Ashfield School and funded by NHS Choosing health money, the families signed up to the five week healthy eating and cooking programme to learn more about healthy diets and practical cooking ideas.
Throughout the programme the families created dishes such as sautéed chicken and mushrooms and poached pears, all under the guidance of expert chef Craig Harrison of Charnwood Catering. For the final session, which runs after school 5-8pm, the families invite friends along and serve up a three course meal based on what they have learnt from the previous four weeks.
The programme is a fantastic way of learning practical cooking skills and getting families to take responsibility for a healthier diet. Craig Simpson, Ashfield District Council’s Physical Activity Officer commented:
"The families have done remarkably well since the first session when they all learnt knife skills to help them prepare fresh fruit and vegetables, it is great to see parents and children working and cooking together."
