Improvements complete at Lane End, Kirkby

||
Date: 4th August 2009

The completion of works around the Lane End area of Kirkby-in-Ashfield has seen 1.5km of new and resurfaced footpaths laid, providing an important pedestrian link from the west of Kirkby-in-Ashfield to the town centre.

A wetland area has been created in the centre of the site, providing a new habitat for wildlife. The wetland is spanned by a recycled plastic boardwalk providing walkers with a unique experience.

Ashfield District Council has developed the scheme over the past two years with the project being part of an ongoing programme to improve pedestrian links and circular routes in and around Kirkby and to create more natural areas for local residents to enjoy as well as better habitat for wildlife.

The project was funded, on part, thanks to a £30,000 grant from Waste Recycling Group (WRG) through the Landfill Communities Fund which is administered by the Environmental Body WREN. A further £35,000 was provided through sustainable transport contributions from developers (from Ashfield District Council) and £6,700 was provided by Nottinghamshire County Council.

In addition, contributions were also provided by from private sector organisations. Recresco Ltd (a local glass recycling company) provided £10,000 towards the improvements to the roadway and the public right of way adjacent to their offices and a £5,000 contribution was provided by Network Rail for other aspects of the scheme which include formalising an access track to the Robin Hood Railway Line and the creation of a stone ballast storage bunker which provide Network Rail with improved access for maintenance and a dedicated storage area.
