Council helps pupils on clean-up mission
||Enthusiastic pupils from Bagthorpe Primary School sprang into action when they accepted an important mission to help clean up rubbish around their school and also identify areas with a dog-fouling problem.
The Year 5 and 6 pupils were guided in their 'Let's Clean Up' work by Ashfield District Council, with Neighbourhood Response Officer - Trevor Middleton, Neighbourhood Response Team Leader – Dave Darrington and local councillor Sam Wilson, on hand to explain the importance of caring for their environment, provide essential equipment for the operation, and help them with their work.
Pupils discussed the litter problem and why dog fouling was a health hazard. After their clean-up work they designed posters to persuade people to take litter home and dog walkers to clean up after their dogs. The Council is now making the best posters into signs to be displayed on the school fence.
The day's activities were a great success with massive haul of rubbish collected and a number of dog fouling problem areas identified by the hard-working pupils.
Commented Head of Neighbourhood Services, Edd deCoverly:
"Bagthorpe Junior School is extremely pro-active in addressing these important environmental issues and the pupils are very enthusiastic. We are delighted to be able to help facilitate this excellent work and feel this kind of initiative will make a real difference to the young people's attitudes on their environment as they get older."
