Thieves Cause A Danger To Pedestrians
||The past few months has seen another spate of gully lid thefts from roadsides in Ashfield, particularly around the Hucknall and Sutton areas.
A similar problem occurred last year with many of the gully lids, also known as grates, being stolen from across the District.
Apart from the obvious risk of blockage to the highway drainage system and subsequent flooding as a result of debris falling into the gully chamber, there is an immediate danger of injury to pedestrians and potential vehicle damage.
The exposed chambers are up to three feet deep and are situated directly below the kerb line. Pedestrians are at greatest risk, particularly when stepping down from the pavement in order to cross the road or access parked vehicles.
The gully lids are made of cast iron and are almost certainly being stolen for their scrap metal value, which is costing the Council thousands of pounds to replace.
If you have witnessed a gully theft or have noticed missing lids which pose a danger to the public, please contact either the Police or Ashfield District Council on 0800 183 84 84.
