Youth Project Takes Shape In Memory Of Local Boy

||
A memorial area for youth is taking shape at Washdyke Lane Recreation Ground, Hucknall thanks to a group of local young people who wanted to create a memorial to their friend Daniel Banks, who was killed on the road nearby several years ago.

            Design and EngineeringLocal residents had already suggested a space for young people to socialise on the recreation ground, and the two ideas were combined with the help of an artist, a landscape architect from Ashfield District Council and Hucknall Youth Service.

A group of young people came together to develop ideas with input from local residents and police. The group built models to trial different ideas and eventually settled on a design with sheltered seating which is both visible and provides a permanent home for the flag that was erected in Daniel's memory. The area also includes a kick-wall and basketball hoop as well as decorative fencing and solar powered low-level lighting.

The group recently visited the workshop of Campbell Design and Engineering Ltd, near Doncaster, to see the shelter being fabricated and help paint the figure silhouettes that have been produced to decorate the fence panels. The silhouettes were based on images taken and chosen by the group. It is anticipated that the structure will be installed early in May.

As part of another project, construction work is also set to begin on a new children’s play area for the Recreation Ground in the next few months. Designs have been modified following comments at a consultation session last year, and will offer an exciting neighbourhood play space for local families.
