Council Crackdown On Littering

||
Date: 17 August 2010

Ashfield District Council launched its first 'Litter Crackdown' in Sutton-in-Ashfield last week with great success.

A team of eight Community Protection Officers (CPOs) whilst patrolling the streets of Sutton undertook a crackdown on littering in the District.

During a two hour period, a total of 17 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were issued, although many people were happy to take notice of advice from the officers and positively disposed of their rubbish responsibly.

Residents within the District have highlighted littering and fly-tipping as one of their concerns and Ashfield District Council take this very seriously.

Councillor Warren Nuttall, Ashfield District Council said: “Ashfield is getting cleaner all the time and we are grateful to our residents for acting responsibly. Unfortunately however, some people still do not dispose of their rubbish properly and this initiative shows that within a short period of time offences are still taking place. We continue to ask people to use the bins provided or to take their rubbish home, but if they chose not to, they risk being fined or prosecuted."

The Council has a limited number of free ‘Mini Bins’, a portable, odour containing ash tray to dispose of cigarette butts safely when out and about. They can be obtained at any of the District Council Offices in Ashfield.
