Icicle Advice
||The snow and icy conditions of the last week have caused a large amount of snow on rooftops across the country and the formation of many large icicles which are hanging from the gutters of properties.
As the predicted thaw gets under way during the next few days the Council is advising people to be vigilant of the potential hazards of melting snow and falling icicles.
Icicles which have formed at the edges of roofs and gutters can pose a potential threat to all those walking in and about buildings, as well as placing additional strain on gutters.
Property owners are reminded of their responsibility to maintain their buildings in a safe condition and with this in mind; the Council would ask that everyone concerned should, where possible, have a look at their properties to see if there are any icicles that could cause injury should they fall.
This is particularly important for terraced properties where the general public pass by on the adjacent footpath.
Removing icicles should only be done if it can be carried out safely – do not put yourself or others at risk.
Be aware too that icicles can fall with some force so it is best to have someone keeping the area below clear and considering anything that may be damaged by dislodging hanging ice.
The thawing process may also lead to large quantities of snow and ice falling from rooftops onto the ground below.
Everyone should take care when travelling around Ashfield and beyond to ensure they are not putting themselves at risk.
If you have a neighbour who you know isn’t able to make the necessary checks, please take the time to visit them and make sure they are ok and are aware of the potential dangers.
