Aim Higher Scheme – A Formula For Success

||
Date: 28th July 2010

The Ashfield Aim Higher Scheme has proved to be a winner for Kirkby-in-Ashfield student Andrew Morris.

The scheme, managed by the Regeneration Team at Ashfield District Council is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund and is focussed on encouraging undergraduates to return to the District to work in local businesses. The scheme has supported 45 undergraduates and 30 local businesses since 2009.

Andrew, a previous Ashfield School student, has been studying Accounts and Finance at Nottingham Trent University and has completed a successful eight week project with Quantum Clothing in the summer of 2009.

He has been working as part of the finance team to help to improve the company’s management accounts systems and felt that the Aim Higher Scheme had helped him to use skills that are more relevant to the world of work.

Andrew said “University provides the theory and teaches you how to pass exams, but the experience I have had at Quantum has let me see how my course can be best put to use in practice”.

The company were so pleased with his performance that they called him back this year at the end of his studies to offer him a position with the company in their Finance Section.

Karan  Woodward, Human Resources Director, Quantum Clothing said “We are delighted to be able to offer Andrew a position with the company following his very successful placement with us last summer and we hope he will prove to be a real asset in the future”.

Ella O’Connor, Senior Economic Regeneration Officer at Ashfield District Council said “This positive outcome is a good example of the Ashfield Aim Higher Scheme working to link talented young people with good quality opportunities in local companies for the benefit of the local economy”.
