Tough Penalties For Irresponsible Dog Owners

||
Irresponsible dog owners in Ashfield could soon be facing severe penalties if they do not take adequate responsibility for their dog.

Ashfield District Council is currently seeking views on the proposed Dog Control Orders which is out for formal public consultation.

The Orders will potentially: enforce dog fouling district wide, exclude dogs from areas specifically designed for children or certain sports such as; children's play areas, tennis courts and bowling greens, insist that all dogs in certain locations must be on a lead and restrict the number of dogs on leads under the control of any one person at any one time.

There are many dog owners across Ashfield and whilst the majority act responsibly, a small number of inconsiderate dog owners do not keep their dogs under control and clear up after their mess which causes many problems for the community.”

Rebecca Whitehead, Community Protection Manager said "The Council receives a high number of complaints each year concerning dogs. In response to these concerns, the Council is seeking to introduce measures in order to take appropriate action if dog owners are being irresponsible. These measures focus on reducing potential health implications associated with dog faeces, promoting responsible dog ownership and reducing the number of complaints related to dog faeces".

Councillor Wilmott added "Dog owners have the right to enjoy their pets and to exercise them, however, residents and children have a right to be able to enjoy a clean safe environment and be able to access recreational areas free from uncontrolled dogs and dog mess."

The Council intend to issue fixed penalty notices to enforce the proposed dog control orders.

Copies of the proposed Dog Control Orders are available to view online at www.ashfield-dc.org.uk/dogcontrol/  or at the Council Offices.  The consultation period ends midnight on 20 August 2010.
