The Young And Old Come Together In Ashfield
||An event to bring older and younger people together will be held on Saturday 17th July at Healdswood Community Centre, Stanton Hill, Sutton-in-Ashfield from 2 – 4pm.
The J4U Partnership Intergenerational Event will be for the old and young to share their skills, experiences and ideas and enable the generations to gain a better understanding of each other, foster greater respect, trust and tolerance between young and old and hopefully discover that they have more in common than they thought.
Both the young and older people in Sutton North have been involved in the planning of the event and the agreed theme will be ‘Heritage’, looking at activities enjoyed by young people today and how these might have been undertaken by the older generations in the 1940’s and 50’s.
The activities to be featured are Crafts, Cycling, Boxing (showcasing activities young people already do at the community centre), Everyday Living, Food & Drink and Music – with interactive sessions and workshops taking place during the event.
There will also be a ‘what’s on’ feature which will highlight the different clubs, activities and events in the area for everyone in the local community.
Gill Brookes, Community Development Officer, Ashfield District Council said “The majority of children and young people in Ashfield are a credit to their parents, carers and communities – they are well behaved, do well at school and regularly take part in positive activities. But sometimes, it does not feel like that, and all too often the behaviour of an incredibly small minority of young people influences our perceptions of young people as a whole”.
We are interested to hear from anyone who might be able to loan us memorabilia for the event or from people who have stories to tell about activities they have been involved with in the past, especially boxing veterans.
If you are able to help or would like to come along to the event please contact Gill Brookes, Community Development Officer on 01623 457091 mailto:g.brookes@ashfield-dc.gov.uk
