Allotments For All In Ashfield

||
22nd March 2010

Residents in Ashfield are to benefit from improved allotment services thanks to the District Council's plans to optimise the area's existing allotment sites.

The Council is working on a framework for the next five years to develop and manage the District's allotments in partnership with local people. It is hoped that improved services will allow and encourage more people to gain access to use of the local allotments.

Councillor Warren Nuttall commented,

“Ashfield District Council recognises that allotments provide many social and environmental benefits. Not only is gardening a great physical activity that promotes good health but it also is a good way of producing wholesome food for minimal costs, encouraging social interaction and community building and giving people a sense of achievement and wellbeing.

Allotments are also a great way for families to encourage children to get outdoors within a safe environment and learn new skills whilst gaining knowledge on where the food that we eat comes from.”

Within the Council's framework, it will set out to provide allotment sites that are welcoming and accessible to all, that are well maintained, safe and secure. It will also actively promote the benefits and use of allotments and continue to improve the management of allotment sites.
