Kick Start To A Healthy 2011
||Families in Ashfield are being offered a final chance to sign up to free healthy lifestyle programmes through MEND (mind, exercise, nutrition, do-it!).
The partnership scheme between Ashfield District Council and SLM, is aimed at children aged 7-13 and is ideal for parents who are concerned about their children's weight and want to make healthier lifestyle choices.
The 10 week MEND programme consists of two, 2-hour sessions per week and covers nutrition subjects such as fats and sugars, and offers regular physical activity sessions including fun games and swimming.
The programme which normally cost up to £400 per place is being offered for free thanks to funding from Big Lottery. Places on the programme are limited and will need to be booked in advance.
The programmes will take place:
- Lammas Leisure Centre, every Wednesday and Friday, 5-7pm (starting Friday 4th February)
- Edgewood Leisure Centre, Hucknall, every Monday and Wednesday, 5-7pm (starting Monday 31st January)
Frank Horsley, Head of Community and Economic Promotion, Ashfield District Council said: “It is well recognised by health professionals that overweight and obesity in childhood can cause health problems later in life, such as heart disease and diabetes. This type of programme can help children grow into a healthier weight and reduce the risk of health problems in later life.”
