Theatre Company On The Hunt For Local Researchers

||
Nottingham based community theatre company Hanby and Barrett are working with Ashfield District Council to explore the possibility of creating a new show for the area to coincide with the two hundredth anniversary of the Luddite rebellions in Nottinghamshire.
The company has been creating spectacular plays based on local history for over a decade now, having tackled stories about the execution of local monks at the hands of Henry VIII; the arrival of the Oklahoma oilmen in Eakring during the Second World Wars’ ‘Best Kept Secret’; and the moment when an entire village – Gotham –pretended to be mad to avoid paying tax.

The company are now looking to find out as much as they can about the Luddite movement, and specifically of their actions around the Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield and Hucknall area. It is hoped that they can gather details and stories of local people who were involved, and of how the movement was received by the local population and how the local landowners, mill owners and members of parliament responded.

They are looking for people from the area who would be interested in helping them with this research, and the possible development of this material into a play that could be performed in streets and public spaces, as much of their previous work has been.

They will be holding a meeting at The Poplars, Charles Street, Sutton-In-Ashfield, NG17 4LU, 7.00pm On Wednesday 14th  December where they will explain more about the work that the company has done in bringing local history to life in spectacular fashion, and their hopes to create what could be a hugely memorable project here in Ashfield.

If you would like more information about the meeting then please email
