Council Gets Tough On Rogue Landlords

||
Date: 4th October, 2011

Ashfield District Council is set to get tougher on rogue landlords operating within the district by increasing Private Sector Enforcement Team.
Councillors agreed to plans that will lead to a restructuring of the Council's Private Sector Enforcement Team including the recruitment of an additional team member to help meet demand.

There have been an increasing number of service requests for disrepair cases and anti-social behaviour relating to the private rented housing sector over the past five years.

There were 339 service requests dealt with in 2006/7 with the figure steadily rising every year and almost doubling in 2010/11 with 585 requests.

The proposed restructuring would allow the Council to meet the service demands of local residents and ensure that vulnerable and low income families are safeguarded from living in substandard private sector accommodation.

It would also assist in tackling the rise in empty properties within the district, which can lead to anti-social behaviour in neighbourhoods.

Cllr Steven Carroll of Ashfield District Council, said: “With the substantial rise in service requests it is imperative that this service is restructured so that it can work to eliminate causes of potential anti-social and so that families are living in a good standard of property.”
