Skate Jam Goes Down A Storm

||
Date: 5th October, 2011

More than 300 people from across Nottinghamshire turned up to the Skate Jam event on Titchfield Park, Hucknall on Saturday 1st October 2011.
The event was to celebrate the opening of the brand new £100,000 skatepark in Hucknall and to thank all of the young people who had worked with Ashfield District Council on the park.

The Council’s Landscape Team co-ordinated the design and construction of the skate park which took almost 12 months to prepare.

This entailed many meetings with the park designers, Freestyle Skateparks, and local enthusiasts to make sure every detail was just right.

The Skate Jam event went down a storm with the people who visited, especially the demonstration and competitions put on by Nise Skateboards.

Visitors also had the chance to try their hand at the extreme sport of Slacklining, courtesy of Tri-Slacklining. (Slacklining is the art of balancing on a flat line of webbing tensioned between two anchor points. The nature of the webbing and its tension means that, unlike a tightrope, the slackline is stretchy and bouncy, like a trampoline).

Nottingham-based artists Urban Canvas were also in attendance, to gather ideas for an artwork planned for the skatepark. They will be following this up with a workshop at the Interchange with young people who are interesting in getting involved.

Trevor Watson, Acting Service Director – Economy said:

“The skatepark project has been made possible due to the dedication of the Landscape Team, the designers, local young people and through the contributions from local housing developers towards the improvement of local open space (Section 106).

‘This involvement has ensured a skate park that local users are very proud of, as demonstrated by the amazing turnout out people from across the county and the resoundingly positive feedback on the day.’
