The talents of Ashfield's university undergraduates were recognised at a celebration event for 22 students who recently completed eight week work placements with local employers.
The highly successful Ashfield Aim Higher Scheme is managed by Ashfield District Council and is supported through the European
Regional Development Fund.
Two distinctive awards were also presented, by Councillor Steven Carroll, in recognition of the students achievements:
The Most Enterprising Student Award was presented to Naomi Sterling. Naomi was placed at Buckley House Veterinary Practice in Hucknall and produced a business plan for the future which took into account a client survey and the practicalities of private enterprise. Naomi was highly regarded by staff and worked well under her own initiative. She was recognised for her enthusiasm, enterprise and confidence.
The Most Innovative Company Project was presented to Nicholas Mahy. Nicholas was placed in the Planning Department at Ashfield District Council. Nicholas streamlined the application process as well as assisting in shaping the future of planning in the Ashfield District.
The winners each received an engraved paperweight, a certificate and a cheque for £100 each. Runners up were: Daniel Easom, Jack Ellis and Oliver Redfern who each received a cheque for £25.
The students who participated said that they had found the experience invaluable in respect of their studies and putting their theory into practice and also more generally from working in a real business environment. Many of the students hadn’t appreciated the range of good quality employment available to them in Ashfield and said that they would now consider returning to the area when they leave university.
Businesses of varying sizes participate in the scheme and all have said that they had been very impressed with the level of capability and initiative shown by the students. Many of the employers, before the placements began, felt that the students would require a great deal of supervision and support. However, once in place they soon realise that this is not the case. The students work well with little supervision and are very willing to put forward their fresh ideas and suggestions. Many of the businesses have stated that these students provide a fresh perspective.
Paul Thomas, Economic Regeneration Manager at Ashfield District Council, said:
“The Ashfield Aim Higher Scheme provides students with a high quality project placement, that is linked to their studies, as well as giving local businesses support in developing new ideas and processes through working with bright young people.
The scheme is helping young people to come back to work in Ashfield, which ensures that local skills are retained in the District for the benefit of the local economy. This project is proving to be a great success with obvious business benefits. I would encourage local companies to take part in the scheme and make use of the skills available on their doorstep”.
Any businesses or students interested in participating in the scheme in the future should contact the Regeneration Section at Ashfield District Council on 01623 457008.
