Business Rates FAQ

||
Business rates (also known as National Non-Domestic Business rates or NNDR) are the means by which businesses, and others who occupy non-domestic property, make a contribution towards the cost of local services.

Further information about who has to pay business rates

Business rates are paid to Ashfield District Council, who acts as a Billing Authority on behalf of the Government.  Select for method of payment options. The rates collected are pooled by central government and redistributed to local councils according to the number of people living in the area.

Business Rates are property based and are calculated by multiplying the property's rateable value by the rating multiplier (a rate in the pound). Rateable values are determined by the Valuation Officer Agency, while the rating multiplier is set by Central Government. Ashfield District Council has no influence on these factors; we only collect the rates due.
