Doug Caunt Biography

Doug Caunt was born in Skegby, by Mansfield, in 1933 and was educated at St Andrews School Skegby and Mansfield Road School, Sutton-in-Ashfield (near New Cross).

He once worked at 14 years of age at Teversal Colliery otherwise known as Butcherwood Pit.

Mr Caunt served as a Grenadier Guardsman and marched on the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. His service took him to Germany, London and Egypt before leaving the Guards in 1956.

Mr Caunt married Hilda June Hall in Ruddington on 1st April 1961. They left for Perth, Western Australia, with two daughters and June pregnant with their son, leaving from Southampton on the ship "Castel Felice" on 24th December 1965. They sailed into a storm which sank a North Sea oil rig with the loss of over 200 lives. It was a rough crossing.

Mr Caunt's son was born in Pemberton, Western Australia, and they later added another daughter to their family. He obtained a degree in Public Health, became a member of the Health Officers Association of WA, and retired in 1994 from the Australian Quarantine Service having been OIC Fremantle, Perth Airport and South West Ports.

Their children are all grown up and professionally qualified and living independent lives.
