The Civil Contingencies Act has means that as a Category 1 responder, Ashfield District Council has several duties in respect of emergency planning and Civil Contingencies, along with other organisations, such as along with the Emergency Services, NHS Bodies and the Environment Agency.

These duties include:

• Assess local risks and use this to inform emergency planning
• Put in place emergency plans
• Put in place Business Continuity Management arrangements
• Put in place arrangements to make information available to the public about civil protection matters and maintain arrangements to warn, inform and advise the public in the event of an emergency
• Share information with other local responders to enhance co-ordination
• Co-operate with other local responders to enhance co-ordination and efficiency
• Provide advice and assistance to businesses and voluntary organisations about business continuity management

A lot of this work was already being undertaken by Ashfield District Council in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council and the Local Resilience Forum. The Civil Contingencies Act simply gives a national framework for us to work within.
