Abandoned Vehicles - What The Law Allows Us To Do
||A vehicle that is reported to the Council as abandoned must first be visited by a Council Officer to confirm the vehicle details, and assess the condition and value of the vehicle.
A vehicle keeper check is conducted through the Police for every vehicle.
If a vehicle is confirmed abandoned and of negative value (generally wrecked or burnt-out) a notice must be affixed to the vehicle and the vehicle photographed.
The vehicle can then be removed after 15 days where it has been left on private land, or after 24 hours where it has been left on the road or pavement.
In certain circumstances, where a vehicle is considered to be a serious hazard to the environment or the community, the Council will remove the vehicle before the notice expires.
The Police have powers to remove any vehicle considered to be a risk to the safety of road users or pedestrians or causing an obstruction. Police also have statutory powers to take action under the vehicle license evasion laws.
