Teversal was designated as a conservation area in 1970. The conservation area
has a very 'old English character' and is centred around Teversal Manor, which once belonged to the Molyneux and Carnarvon
families. The village is surrounded by an undulating, agricultural landscape, almost unblemished by man-made vertical
structures. The rural character is further enhanced by the retention of hedgerows, stone walls, a combination of stone and
brick built properties dating back to the Twelfth Century, and traces of the villages aristocratic and agricultural past in
the form of Teversal Manor and nearby farm buildings. The Appraisal of the Conservation Area aims to guide the preservation
and enhancement of Teversal. It outlines the setting, character and important features and aspects of the village, and sets
out a Management Plan to sustain them. One important recommendation is to alter the boundary of the conservation area to include
a site of Importance for Nature Conservation and areas important for views of the village. |
Twelve members of the Molyneux family are buried in the church of St.
Katherine's in the village, whilst the Fifth Earl of Carnarvon is remembered for his sponsorship of the excavation of
Tutankhamun's tomb.
The village is also famous for being the setting of D.H. Lawrence's novel "Lady Chatterley's
Lover". The Lady Chatterley Trail is a six-mile walk through
Teversal and the surrounding area, featuring many of the locations mentioned in the book.
Teversal Pastures is a Site
of Special Scientific Importance (SSSI).
