Article 4
||Planning legislation makes provision for certain "permitted developments" to be carried out without the need for a formal planning application. In relation to residential properties this can include extensions, garden sheds, greenhouses and fences, subject to certain size and siting restrictions.
Article 4 directions can be served by the Council to remove specified permitted development rights, thereby requiring a formal planning application to be submitted for all such works in the area covered by the direction.
They are used to provide the Council with greater control over development, for instance in particularly sensitive locations such as Conservation Areas, or to safeguard the future occupants of a building.
Article 4 directions apply in the following areas of Ashfield:
| Old Kirkby Conservation Area | Permitted development rights for the demolition of boundary walls have been removed |
| Dalestorth Close, Skegby | Permitted development rights for the erection of extensions have been removed. |
| Various agricultural fields around Bagthorpe | Permitted development rights for agricultural buildings have been removed. |
| Various agricultural fields at Downsgates Lane, Skegby | Permitted development rights for agricultural buildings have been removed. |
| Selston Common and Selston Green | Permitted development rights for agricultural buildings have been removed. |
