If your property is more than 15 years old, it is possible that it contains materials made from asbestos.

Asbestos on a building

Common locations of asbestos include:

You must assume that any asbestos is potentially lethal and handle it with extreme care.

Ashfield District Council's Environmental Health section can provide further advice about the risks of asbestos.

What to do if you have asbestos in your home

AsbestosThe general rule is to always leave asbestos alone – it's usually safe unless damaged or disturbed. Indoor materials should be painted with an alkali-resistant paint such as PVA emulsion. Never sand, drill or saw asbestos materials.

Always seek advice before removing asbestos. Do not attempt to remove asbestos lagging, spray coatings or large areas of insulation board by yourself; these materials can only be removed by a licensed contractor.

Asbestos Waste Removal

The Council DO NOT offer a service for the collection of asbestos.

Residents can take their own asbestos to a Nottingham disposal site on pre-arrangements with Nottinghamshire County Council arranged by calling their Customer Services Centre on 08449 808080.
