Spreading Fats - A Guide

Butter

80% Fat e.g. Anchor, Lurpak

Butter must contain at least 80% fat, the rest is water. All the fat must be milk fat so butter is high in saturates.

Margarine

80% Fat e.g. Flora, Stork

Margarine must contain at least 80% fat therefore it has just as many calories as butter.

They can be high in polyunsaturates (e.g Flora and Vitalite) which are lower in saturates than ordinary margarine (e.g. Stork).

Fat Spread

60-80% Fat, e.g. Golden Churn, Clover

Made of vegetable and /or dairy fat and so vary in the amount of saturates and polyunsaturates they contain.

Reduce Fat Spread

60% Fat e.g. Vitalite Light, Olivio

Made of vegetable oils alone or blended with dairy fat. They have water added.

Lower Fat Spread

40% Fat e.g. Delight, St Ivel Gold

Made with vegetable and/or dairy fat. Those with more dairy fat will usually be higher in saturates.

Very Low Fat Spread

20-25% Fat e.g. St Ivel Gold Lowest, Delight Extra Low

Usually made from a blend of vegetable oils. The weight is made up by relatively high proportions of water.
