11 The Old Blue Bell

Was probably built in the early 18th century, around 1730. This public house is a grade II listed building. Select for an architectural description.

In 1817 it was here that an inquest was held on one Elizabeth 'Bessie or Betsy' Sheppard, a young girl murdered near Thieves' Wood by Charles Rotherham.

A stone still stands to her memory by the side of the A60 in Harlow Wood.

In 1846 on Saturday evenings the Bright Eyed Club met at the Old Blue Bell, where the Reverend W Goodacre would read the news from the weekly newspaper, mainly for those who were unable to read themselves.
