14 Old Malt House

||
This stood behind what is now Firth's newsagents, This was one of Sutton's oldest cotton mills. It came to be known as the Malt House when used to produce malt for beer. It stood derelict until quite recent times when it was demolished.

Nearby Portland Square is believed to have once been the first village green. Once known as Swine Green, when the village pond there was used to water livestock, it became known as Engine Green when a building to house the town's manual fire engine was erected there. The Local Board renamed it Portland Square in honour of Sutton's beneficiary the Duke of Portland. It is now a pedestrianised area with the largest sundial in Europe.
