In order to ensure that vehicle crossings are properly constructed, all domestic vehicle crossings must be built by the Council.

Considerations before you make your application

Is planning permission required?

Planning permission will be required in the following instances:

If it appears that your property comes within one of the above classifications and planning permission is required, please select this link for our planning web pages  or contact our Planning section.

Is your property a council house?

Making an application

To obtain an accurate quote and associated paperwork we suggest a supervisor visits to evaluate the work required. This service is free of charge.

The quote provided will be valid until the 31st March of that year. The estimated cost for a standard drop crossing is £300, however, this is a guide and will vary according to individual requirements.

It is your responsibility to remove any fencing, wall or hedging within the property at the place where the crossing will be located before construction can take place.

After payment has been received, we will, on average, complete the work within a couple of weeks, however depending upon our workload it can take up to six weeks before we attend the scheme. Once work has started construction will take no longer than 3 days.

Rights

The construction of a vehicle crossing does not give the occupier of the premises any particular rights, except to drive across the footway to gain access to his/her property with a private or light goods motor car.

The crossing itself is part of the public highway. From the date that the Council accepts the completed crossing, they will assume responsibility for its maintenance at no cost to the occupier, apart from any damage caused by illegal use by heavy vehicles.

Conditions

Conditions relevant to the construction and the use of a domestic vehicle crossing after it has been completed.
