RSS is an easy way to keep you updated on changing information on websites without having to visit them. And the feed is in XML format, so is totally device independent.
To receive a feed, you simply need a news-reader. This automatically displays any new items from any number of RSS feeds, bringing them together in one place on your PC, PDA, or mobile phone.
There are dozens of news-readers (or 'aggregators') available, many for free (see 'Useful Links' panel on the right). Most news readers are applications that you download and install. Some others are a web-based service you sign-up for that work inside your browser. Or your browser might already have one (Firefox, for example, has a 'live bookmarks' feature which reads RSS feeds, and a nifty plug-in aggregator called Sage).
Once you have a news reader, you let it know the location of an RSS feed and leave it to alert you of new items.
RSS feeds can also be incorporated into other websites and weblogs. If you use the Council's feeds in this way, could you please contact our web-team to let them know.
There is more information about RSS feeds and links to readers on the BBC website.
